ST THOMAS ASSEMBLY PLANT - To be destroyed

The end of an era. :( I'm glad I got to tour STAP when I did.

Frankly, I thought it had already been torn down...
 
Shame. Know it will be missed.
At one time we had the big three here, but all have long since closed. Gm building is still standing, but is now an office park. Ford plant was torn down after sitting idle for many years. Space is now office and retail shopping area.

I posted this from a news radio report ( this morning ) that said paperwork had been submitted for the demolition of the plant .

News at 5PM Elgin county offcials said no paper work had been submitted yet for the go ahead to tear down the plant yet .
 
That's a shame. I always wanted to go there and take the tour. I may have to drive over once the demolition starts and try to find some bricks or other small debris as a souvenir. I wonder what happened to some of the huge Ford logos that were on the building.

Good thinkin', I might do the same thing. It's worth saving some kind of physical memory of the place.
 
You know what? Screw it. Drive your car and don't go. This will be nothing, but upsetting. Enjoy what you have today, forget about the downside of what "Once was".
 
Most of you guys are too young to remember when Ford closed their Edgewater, NJ plant (which is now a pier jutting into the Hudson with shops and condos).

They replaced Edgewater with a big plant in Mahwah, NJ, and then they eventually closed that plant.

My father-in-law worked at both plants and then wound up at the Ford Teterboro, NJ, parts depot.

That depot has also been closed.
 
Glad to have toured it in 2010 and 2011.

I've been past there a few times since then. There's no Ford signage left and it's quite desolate looking. Anyone thinking about making a trek will likely be disappointed so, incorporate it with something else (perhaps a trip to the Falls).
 
Now I'm even more glad I got pictures of The Blackbird in front of the big sign when we went by in '05 on our way to Lidio's.
 
i worked at the ''metuchen assembly plant'' in new jersey. they closed that plant in 2004.they demolished it in 2010. they built a ''sam's club'' on the property. and a gas station. I worked there 37 years.When i started to worked there they were building the ford mustang
