I just did my struts and the ball joint separated from the spindle by themselves on both sides. No need for a splitter. Those nuts were a pain though!

As others have said here it is not unusual for the headlamps to burn out in pairs. It is very likely that once one burns out, the other is right behind it as it has burned the same amount of time.

Visual inspection isn't enough. Go buy a pair of new bulbs and giver a shot!
