Things to do to junkyard replacement motor

There's a coolant tube that goes under the intake manifold. Rear cooling head mod. Exhaust manifold bolts/studs. Things to consider.

    automatic lights

Not all cars have auto headlights, but they all have wipers. So, it is possible to require vehicle manufacturers to run the headlights when the wipers are turned on. There is no mandate for "auto" headlights, but there ought to be.

8 rib alternator pulley problems, 03 MM

The pulley on stock engines is a clutch type pulley. Its purpose is to eliminate the loud squeal that occurs when the engine abruptly drops from a high rpm to a lower rpm, such as during WOT upshifts. It's not there for a few extra hp. On a supercharged engine, same thing I imagine. Unless the...

8 rib alternator pulley problems, 03 MM

It's not about hp, it's about the squeal the belt makes on the alternator pulley during hard upshifts. SC doesn't matter, only engines without a heavy alternator.

    31-spline swap-in parts?

That sticky replaces the carrier itself. But a few members mentioned swapping in just the spider gears. Let me dig up the posts... https://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1579201&share_type=t&link_source=app...

    31-spline swap-in parts?

My spider gears are on their way out (heavy galling, not going to last much longer), and I'm looking for a solution. A few other threads mention swapping in 31-spline axle/side gears, spider gears and axles as a direct drop in. My questions are: 1. Has anyone confirmed this to be actually...

    500k kms, finally!

Snagged perch and pickerel from Knetchel's. Will have to try the Beach Hotel next time.

    500k kms, finally!

I would've reached this about 3 years ago, but COVID really reduced my need to drive so much. Conveniently got there while at the beach at Port Dover, Ontario.

    Timesert sparkplug repair

Completed the repair last weekend, and have put on about 100km since then. The above instructions were excellent, but I did one extra step: I couldn't figure out how to tell if the tap is sunken 1/4" as instructed, since it's way down in the cylinder when you need to measure it. What I did...

Anyone in the GTA with a spark plug thread repair kit?

Blew a spark plug. Looking for the time-sert thread repair tool, can't find it anywhere. Before ordering from the US, thought I'd ask here.

    Timesert sparkplug repair

Thanks for the detailed writeup, especially the part numbers. Looks like I'll be dealing with this in the next few days. Edit: There's another kit available that comes with 5 of the 44186 inserts: 4412E-681.

    RAS question “Check Air Suspension”

If I recall correctly, the RAS and power Variable Assist Power Steering module are one in the same. The one box has a connector for the power steering, and another for the RAS. As both systems are having issues, I'd start there. Maybe a corroded ground or crusties in the connectors or in rhe...

Cooling System Piping Replacement - Obsolete

You can probably use a length of heater hose instead of the pipe. Might not look as nice, but should do the trick just fone.

    wheels in snow season

Get some 16s from a grand marquis after 2002. The taller sidewall makes the ride more comfortable on pitted icy roads and potholes in the spring. Tyres are also less expensive than 18s. Some people say the narrower tread of the equivalent 16s (215/65/16) cuts through slush and snow better than...

    Alternator Clutch Pulley

The Dorman lists 1998-2005 CV, MGM and MM under applications. The Litens lists 2003-up CV and MGM under applications. The overlap tells me the Litens listing is incomplete. I'm not surprised the MM wasn't listed. The fact Dorman lists the same part for these years is good enough for me.

    Alternator Clutch Pulley

So I measure about 12 inches on either side between ribbed pulleys. 12 inches between the alternator and power steering pump pulleys. 12 inches from ribbed idler pulley to the alternator, around the smooth idler. That gives me room for 1 full rib on the belt. I measured one rib to be about 4...

    Alternator Clutch Pulley

Thanks! This is actually useful information. Acording to this, it's 1/2 a rib for every 6 inches of pulley separation. Time to get out a ruler...

    Alternator Clutch Pulley

Because the OAD was available and about 30% cheaper, and since it's newer tech I'm hoping it lasts longer. Every OAP I've ever used seized up in a year or so.
