Radiator fan motor went out, anyone had this?

Black_Noise

Self installed Trilogy #239
looks like the stock motor/fan is $400+ and an aftermarket is about $150?

Anyone else had this go out?
Went bad yesterday, fan starts spinning then starts wobbling and scrapping shroud for 3-5 seconds then shuts off and tries again in 20-30 seconds.

It was very hot yesterday, I think thats what took out the bearing.

Suggestions?

PM bigdogjim and 03mmmonroe for info on this, I think BDJ had similar issues, and Russ replaced the unit for him.

Also, IIRC, the aftermarket stuff was crap, they went with OEM for the fix.

Happened to me too, at 85K. Also went OEM. In my case, it was a little different, because Kenny Brown adapted the MM fan into a Mustang fan shroud. The Mustang fan assembly was much more expen$ive.

should i try used? Crown vic or Gran Marq work?

Edit:

crown vic part # 3W1Z8C607BD

marauder part # 3W1Z8C607BD

according to alldata, so I might try used.

just got my dorman fan from amazon .com $120 fan blade is broke on my original but did same thing

Just be careful when using a non-OEM fan unit.

You may encounter a "thermal event"..... ie. the fan may catch fire  !

DO NOT USE A AFTERMARKET FAN, they can set the car on fire

Go with OEM and replace it yourself! Dealer will write-up 2 hrs of labor for the job, don't ask me how I know.... lol

Just curious....where's the empirical evidence of all these aftermarket fan fires? Seems that Dorman sells thousands of these fans but I googled and didn't find any evidence of fires, lawsuits from fires, etc. I'm not in a position to say they aren't happening, but to blanket say don't use aftermarkets they catch on fire seems a little excessive. I put one on my car and so far so good....Lifetime warranty and looked identical to the OEM fan.

Yes, mine went out at the beginning of July. I took a drive from RI - WI. During my time there, sounded like the fan may have been rubbing but turned out it was the motor (bearings) going out but it still worked to get me back to RI. Got a replacement at NAPA for 250 bucks. they also had a cheaper one for under 200. Very quick & easy install, took less than 2 beers.

Same Problem

I'm having the same problem, but it's good, because I though my AC was going out, and I just replaced the damn thing 4000 miles ago! Anybody actually go with the Dorman fans? I can't seem to find an OEM fan, Advance Auto Parts doesn't even carry them.

Won't last!

I did aftermarket and it failed at MV-VIII... If it had not been for Russ I don't what would have happened!
