The Cost of Higher Education

All the good teachers and money in the world can not change the main problem, piss poor parenting... Every time I dealt with the parents of a "problem child" it became readily apparent where it went wrong. Add to that a sense of entitlement and things go down the tubes at an accelerated pace.

Not making excuses for poor parenting, but how can a good parent compete with today's permissive society?

Morals are shot, entertainment standards are in the toilet, the grosser and/or dirtier a statement is on TV, the more attention it gets.

John Stuart, or any comedian, makes a reference to drugs, and the audience goes nuts. Fights break out on Jerry Spinger, and everyone claps. Women who should know better are having multiple births and getting plenty of air time.

Young kid says "that sucks", and everybody laughs.

Bullying is rampant in our schools.

The smart kids were always considered "nerds", but it's gotton worse.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Sometimes I think if it weren't for the ASPCA, we'd be real close to lion/human confrontation in a stadium.

(OK, I'm kidding on the last one, I hope, but you get the idea.)

They can start by teaching right from wrong. I agree with the remainder of your post. My wife and I are all too familiar with the smart kid being bullied. I now pay tuition for my 14 year old daughter to attend a parohocial (sp) high school because of it. Tougher school academically and she is still an honor student.
I have predicted and stand by my statement that at least two of the problem children in her former class will be unwed mothers before graduation. We'll see where everyone is in 15 years. It should be good for a laugh. :D

I don't see a great moral decay amoung todays youth or an increase in the percent who are immoral. The same percent of youth who were immoral when I grew up is what I see today.

The area that concerns me is a continued insulation from competing as in "everyone is a winner" and being lead to believe that if you graduate from college you will automaticaly get a high paying job resulting in instantly aquiring everything your parents have.

Too many have no drive, no "fire in the belly", and do not have the skills to over come the slightest "failure".

Hey with high speed your entire life can be a virtual fantasy so why put in the effort to make it reality.

The best thing is to have your children volunteer at the nursery for the HS Moms. They get to see fist hand what it takes to be a Mom.;)

Big +1 to all of this.

Really?

Just look at the moral decay in our entertainment. You don't think this rubs off on our youth? How could it not?

How about the drug culture?

Many movie/TV/music stars and pro athletes openly permit questionable aspects of their private lives to be made public (no such thing as bad publicity, right?). Such details would never have been made public 30 years ago.

Youth isn't looking?

As for "fire in the belly", I have quite a few young folks in my family, my daughters included, who are un or under-employed. None of them are asking for handouts, but I can see that they are getting pretty dejected looking for jobs that just aren't there.

They all had decent jobs, but those jobs were taken from them.

However, other members of my family and children of close friends who have government related jobs (teaching, police, Federal Air Marshall, local town DPW, etc) are all doing OK, for now.

When that changes, and it will, as the government cuts back, we are in for a one real rough ride.

I am preaching to my young daughter to always strive to do better. Good enough for government work is not the way to go. Anything worth having is worth working hard for and don't expect anyone to give you anything for free. That is what I like about her new school. They are not "teaching to the state mandated test". Do the work, you get the grade. Don't do it and you fail. The way it should be, no free ride.

When I think back to what I saw in 1969-1985, when I was 10-26, there is no comparison to what is going on today. There was no "zero" drug/booze/intoxication/intercourse policy by Schools/LEO/Parents that there are today.

One of the biggest business issues I face today is finding people under 30 to mentor who are self motivated by an inner passion to be the best in their profession.

I have mentored several who have all become very successfull. I cannot give or teach someone inner passion to be the best.

Strange -- when I say almost the exact same thing I get blasted for not doing my job, as if I am supposed to be some miracle cure to a student who wants to be a lazy slob.

Not necessarily at you - but it has happened more than once on here.
