Air conditioning toubleshooting

My MM's AC stopped cooling. the Compressor clutch seemed to be the problem.

Is it OK to replace just the clutch or does the whole compressor assembly need to be replaced?

Bought clutch (around $90) and replaced. Still working great at 64k!

Funny how that works. My 1988 Ranger started cooling intermittently at 180k miles - clutch was working erratically. Tech stated the dryer medium had disintegrated and trashed up the system. Tech cleaned out the system, installed new dryer and converted to R-134 - system worked as good as new with most of its original components.

We owned a 1985 Dodge Lancer with poor a/c. Dealer replaced the clutch twice under warranty but it never changed anything. Took it to an independent shop who stated the 'thermal'(?) switch that controlled the clutch cycling was junk on these cars. It's the switch with the long temp probe that went into a grease filled 'well' on the low pressure side. They were sealed units from the factory.

He installed a similar switch but it had two adjustments for high temp and low temp control over the evap pressure. A/C began working properly for the first time ever! He also adjusted the belt pulley on the motor so it stopped squeaking - our car became a pleasure to own all of the sudden! It was the last Chrysler product we were to own although we have considered several. Strictly Ford (and a Mercury!) products since.
