4.10's

What should it cost me to have a competent shop swap in a set of 4.10's (including the gears, shims, bearings, etc.)? Got a quote for about $1100 locally. Feeling the need to wake this car up a little. I have Lidio's 4.10 tune available, just haven't been able to use it yet.

$300 for just labor here. Yeah, quite high.

$1100?! To me and what I'm used to seein, that's pretty daggum high. I know of a few reputable places around where I live that do labor from $250-300 and the whole job including parts is around $500-600. I would move on and keep lookin...

Kind of like when you bring your food to a restaurant and just ask them to cook it! :P

I was "this" close when I read that to typing the Exact. Same. Thing. Too funny.

In all seriousness. Sometimes, at least with a good company, you can walk out right at the very same retail price as anywhere else you shop and not have to round up parts as they usually pay wholesale through the different venders. At least that's the way it's supposed to work..

Some companies just prefer you do the leg work and get your own.

My feelings are simple, I'm thinking about the lift time/ my garage space when the owner rarely provides everything in full and wrong parts...

I purchased the Motorsport 4.10 gears from Summit racing. A local (excellent) speed shop (Stage 1 Performance, Pompton Plains NJ)installed them and all the supporting parts, and used Royal Purple lube all for under $ 300. Total cost of gears and labor was just over $ 500.00
If your'e paying $ 1100, they had better be also throwing in an aluminum drive shaft and a Level 10 Tranny upgrade.

Comparisons

Last time I checked, my local Ford dealer (sur)charges a +10% on OEM Ford parts used in a shop repair.

Last I checked, a San Francisco Mercedes dealer charged $350 per hour shop rate, but that was a few years ago. I was just on hold for their service department for 10 minutes to ask what their current rate is, and finally hung up, after talking to the operator 2 times. Business must be good in the Golden State!
