AC Cleaning

With the weather warming up and allergy season well under way here, I’ve had to start using the AC. I’ve noticed a moldy smell when I first turn on the AC. It fills the cabin for a few minutes and then seems to dissipate, or I just get used to it. I heard about an AC cleaner & my local dealer says it runs about $50. I was just wondering if anyone has had this service, if it works, and if there’s something that I can pick up and use from a local FLAPS.
Thanks!

Before you park your car, run the VENT for awhile. I usually switch to VENT only about 1-2 miles from my destination.

You could also leave it in the FLOOR setting when parking your car so that air can at least flow through the ducts. The reason for the moldy smell is the moisture in the vents can't dissipate. Cleaning the evap can help, but it isn't the final solution.

There are kits you can buy that might help get rid of the smell. Most times you have to disassemble the system to get it really clean.

I remember when I used to work at a Honda dealership we used to have this small aerosol can of "stuff" that you could spray down the cowl/intake/HVAC vent and would blow through the system. Frigi-Fresh or something like that?

Not sure the stuff is available retail. From what I recall, the stuff has serious brain-damage inducing ingredients...

Must'v inhaled...getting sleepy.........

That spray just prettys up the smell. I doubt it is effective. Ozone in the car would work.

Has anyone used the BG AC Flush?

I have used a product called Odo-Ban. I get it at Sams. With the key on and blower on high spray it into the cowel where it will be pulled into the evap core. Try to soak it fairly well, then shut everything down and let it dry. This product kills the bacteria growing on the evap coils. The smell is a little strong but not unpleasent and goes away within a couple of weeks. This is much cheaper and more effective than the 2-part sprays I have tried.
