Emergency Brake Shoes

crouse

I know nothing
I had the rear end rebuilt in July and about a week ago I used the emergency brake for the first time. The emergency brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I removed the left rear tire and brake rotor and guess what, no pad material on the shoes. I'm guessing they fell off when the shop removed the rotors when they rebuilt the rear end and either didn't notice or noticed and didn't care. I did not check the right side.

Can these shoes be replaced without removing the axles?

They can but it's a PITA. It's easy to take everything apart but can be difficult to get the retaining clips on when putting the new shoes on.
When you get everything apart check that the cables and actuators move freely. The actuators tend to get sticky and cause the shoes to hang up or drag. If so some spray and excercise usually gets things moving.

The other thing is that the rear cover is leaking, so maybe I'll pull the cover and pop the C-clips and pull the axles out.

I should probably bring it back to the shop, but I just don't feel like dealing with all the denial that they didn't do anything wrong crap.

I just did mine and all cables with the axles in. It wasn’t all that bad.

On a side note, I’m pretty sure I’d never take it back to who did the work. Any shop that would let any part of a braking system leave without addressing it or at minimum alerting you to the problem are some pretty shady poopheads..
