First MM purchased with a Rear end issue

I'm not familiar with the POSI rear that my mechanic told me will be $1800 to replace...
I bought this 2003 Marauder with 110k miles for $2000 but I was only able to drive straight!
The moment I turned the wheel a little (or a lot) the whole rear end jerks terribly.
The mechanic said it a big (read expen$ive) job because of the labor.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should have the mechanic check while he's replacing or rebuilding the rear end?

The inside of the car is gorgeous but the body could use around $1000 worth of work.
I figure for $5000 I'll have a beauty.

4:10 gears? What will that improve overall? Also I believe he said he will have to find the whole assembly at the junkyard and it has to match my car exactly (ratio wise) but if what I'm hearing from you, if it was say 3:5 I can now make it 4:10?

Why put a junkyard assembly in? The internals can be all replaced as needed..bearings, gears if needed clutches, rebuild the trac lok..etc..And cheaper than $1800. I wouldn;t spend $1800 on a used rear axle, unless he wants to "bench: rebuild it and swap..but that seems like extra work not needed to me. Have to change brakes over, disconnect all the lines etc. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I would get a second opinion. If you do 4:10's you'll need a tune and SCT device to correct for it in the shifting, speedo.. It'll be fun to drive, but will add to the cost.
 
Rubbercturauder- I'm looking for the most economical job that will work well. Is there a way I can buy all the internal parts (or gears ) needed to get the job done and bring it to my mechanic?

It is not an easy fix. you want a pro. Pros dont use junkyard parts and charge dealership prices. Be smart keep shopping. I wonder if any one has a good tuner in your area. Should ask this forum that question
 
Yes you can buy the parts for a rebuild thru summit racing or thru sparta performance ( a vendor here) I know recently there was a post with part numbers thru summir racing..try a search for rear end rebuild parts and see what comes up.

Can you provide particulars of what the mechanic found wrong?

Is s/he talking about ...
  • worn-out control arm bushings, watts link, etc.
  • RAS (Rear Air Suspension)
  • axles, bearings. (known problem - TSB)
  • gears,
    ??????????
Regarding -used- assembly ... Can you afford, want to do it twice? If not, go with new and upgraded parts.

Regarding 4.10 RAR ... What will be the intended use? Daily driver, occasional driver, occasional week-end racer, etc., etc., etc..

IMO unless you're intending to do some uber engine power improvements, would recommend 3.73 (or leave as 3.55). Stock or near stock 4.6L DOHC in the Marauder is not known for its low-end torque. This will also require a tune to minimally accomodate the RAR change and change the shift points (would also consider a bump in timing as a +(plus)).

A possible rebuild with upgrades route ...
  • aftermarket control arms and watts link. e.g. METCO *might as well add one of their driveshaft safety loops.
    .
  • look into Ford Racing Performance Parts for ...
    • traction-lok rebuild kit with carbon discs.
    • ring gear and pinion set
    • ring and pinion installation kit
    .
  • FoMoCo rear axle and wheel bearing service kit
    .
  • an aftermarket axle girdle
Another consideration ... Rear sway bar - The Marauder has the largest FoMoCo has to offer for the Panther platform (21mm). You could easily after the fact upgrade to (say) an ADDCO BUT would recommend that if you do that you upgrade the front sway bar at the same time.

To answer your question, when you go to a restaurant, do you take your own food and have them cook it for you?

Your mechanic will most likely not give you a deal on labor if you bring your own parts. I rebuilt mine for $6-700 in parts, plus my mechanic who bartered the job, so essentially labor was free.

I certainly get all that. I guess my real question is: what are all the parts necessary to do the job right? I want the mechanic to do the best job he can with the correct parts. How much labor (hours) is involved?

It depends on what you want done? is how much it will cost. If your axles are worn then you need to replace and then the bearings too. Do you want to do a gear ratio change? You'll need a tune with tuner for that and that adds $400 -$425.00

If I don't need any extra performance (more than stock) do I need to change the ratio?
For example, if the stock wasn't as good for mpg or smoothness and everyone who does a rear differential job changes the ratio bec of that, then I might consider it.
But if it's just to add some more horsepower or tire smoking ability, then I'm not intere$ted, if you get my drift...
I'm looking to make it nice & drivable. Nothing fancy.

Limited flip or Traction lock
