Flat back diff covers = bad for the bearings...

I learned some new info today.

Due to fluid dynamics the high capacity flat diff covers actually do more harm than good. They create bad fluid dynamics in the diff causing bearing starvation, reduce HP and fuel mileage.

Very interesting videos.
I never really thought about differential covers...except for the aluminum 8.8 covers with the rear girdle support jack screws.
I've got one in the basement....gotta go check out the internal shape of it.
Now when I see the diesel trucks with those big, aftermarket flat back designs, I'll just smile at their wasted money and overworked rear axle fluid.

Interesting videos. Funny when you stop to think about what he is experimenting with seems so obvious but no one except the OEM engineers took the time to think it through.

Looking forward to the finished product.

Have had the Ford Racing Performance Parts axle girdle installed since 2004.
  • it doesn't have the flat back.
  • it doesn't cause dif' over-fill since the dif' housing fill port is used, though does provide for more lub' capacity.

Never seen the flat dif cover video. That was a really good one.

Sent from the White House on the tax payers dime.

Thanks for this. I viewed the Banks vid in recent weeks - completely educational. Thinking the FRPP cover on my Marauder diff is doing its job quite nicely.:coolman:

Looks to me Mr.Banks is trying to provide functioning aftermarket parts with real world testing.
Hats off to him!! We need more dealers just like him

Why don't they sell a fancy smancy sticker you can put on your OEM cover to make it look fancy smancy? Like those flame stickers?;)

To be fair, this series of videos hasn't actually provided any numbers yet. I hope he releases the final video showing the actual research results - until then, he's just building hype for a new product.

But to be even more fair, he did wreck his dynomometer, so the lengthy delay isn't entirely unexpected.

When I first saw this thread title I was trying to figure out how painting your diff cover flat black could effect performance...reading is hard sometimes 😂

I can't believe Jerry hasn't designed a flat differential cover with curved inside and taking prepaid orders for them already. With custom engraving and powder coating for just a few dollars more.
