Fuel pump

Hey guys, n/a, tune and 4.10's on a daily driver and looking for a quality fuel pump replacement. Any suggestions or just go stock from Ford?

The OEM fuel pump in my '97 Crown Vic left me stranded during a family vacation 200 miles from home at 120K miles.

At what age/mileage is preventative replacement a wise idea? I can't imagine waiting for fuel pump driveability or failure symptoms is the way to go on a critical item like this.
 
hmm....with that logic replace the car. i think it's one of those things that you replace when it quits working. am i wrong here fellas?
 
Sorry for felay guys i was out of town. Yes, my Ford guy thinks field pump is not cycling correctly. Wouldn't start, then few months later I tried to start again and fired right up. Now back to just cranking but not running. He listened to it cycle through and said wasn't sounding too good. Stock Ford is crazy, $379. Like the 255 lph from.blue oval price better. Is there any other good pumps out here for decent price? Have seen mixed reviews from blue oval. Thanks again for all responses and help guys.

I'd say it would depend on how many miles driven.

I get the point where I start replacing stuff like starter, alternator, master cylinder, all belts, hoses, water pump, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, etc. Much easier to replace in your driveway than on the side of the road.

I agree. It gets to be false economy to wait for the parts to hard fail with the accompanying inconvenience, tow bills, not to mention the wailing of the wife if it happens while she is in the car.

And the parts you mention all have design wear mechanisms: brushes and slip rings, bearings, seals, or are made of rubber.

So those of you who plan to run your fuel pump to failure, have at it! I would much prefer to road trip my car with preventatively-replaced components.

Fear not Blue Oval is very good, products are great. My MM felt stronger after replacing the pump, I think mine was going around 90K.
I got a large universal screen from Rock Auto to go with it. This is quality and better than OEM.

I never pay list price for OEM Ford parts. You can buy the stock pump for $269 online. Admittedly still not cheap, but at least tolerable.

I would be tempted to go for the higher volume pump if serious engine upgrades are in your future. If you go with aftermarket, definitely do your research on reliability. If not, stick with stock for proven long life.

Absolutlety right. That's what I did. Car is like new at 140k and I know I can take it anywhere and not get stranded.

Get a Walbro 255 lph pump for $100. Google it.
 
Since this has come up again I remember at one time I thought my fuel pump went in my explorer. I replaced with the local autoparts pump it only to find out that wasn't the fuel pump. So I kept the stock one in a cabinet. 7 years and 60,000 miles later the replacement gave out. So like any frugal (cheapskate) person would do I pulled out the old stock one and put it back in. After 70,000 and a rest it has another 50,000 on it. So in a nutshell oem is not to shabby (although i once had a dodge ram and only got 60,000 and was left stranded on vacation) and when it comes to these things they are like humans, you just never know when your numbers up........

So you've also been stranded by a fuel pump while on vacation, and your recommendation is to drive it until it gives out and leaves you stranded rather than replace it prophylactically :confused:

Just rolled with the ups and downs, I even lived through it :)

What are you going to do change your alternator, starter, overhaul your motor and trans etc. every 3 to 4 years just in case?

Not saying I'm right or wrong. Just saying that's what I'd do.....

Every 3 to 4 years? No. The car is 9 years old now with 100K miles. Every 100 - 120K miles depending on the part? Yes. Just like taking a shower once a week, whether you need it or not.

I'll probably do the alternator, water and fuel pumps at 120K. I'm doing the serpentine tensioner and idler tomorrow. Already did the front and rear suspension, rear axle, shocks, air springs, calipers and master cylinder. And it drives much nicer because I did.
 
Yep agree with lifespeed, after 10 years my whole front end was toast. I've replaced, whole front end with all oem spec Moog. Did the rear too. Im at 96k now have done starter, batt, all pullies, fuel pump (blueovalchips.com) ac compressor, waterpump. Worried about alternator, my last panther stocker died at 105k, probably do that next.
