I'll be in Detroit tomorrow and Wednesday - I think, bringing the family to the Ford Museums. Any suggestions for me to do things with the kids let me know.
 
Rouge Plant tour, Detroit Zoo, Detroit News tour (surprisingly interesting) Edsel and Elenor Ford House in Grosse Pointe, Natural History Mudeum at Cranbrook, Ann Arbor Hands-On-Museum, Detroit Science Center, UofM Natural History Museum (dinosaur bones!), Motown Museum, and the Yankee Air Force Museum are all I can think of in short notice.
 
For a nominal charge you can take a ride by MikesMerc house;)

Dan cited some pretty good stuff. I particularly like the Zoo and the Cranbrook Science center. Henry Ford Greenfield Village is pretty cool too.

Wow, two trips to the Motor City in a two week span. Have fun and see you next week at the Cruise.

I personally recommend the Henry Ford house (Fairlane?), especially if you like looking through big old houses. It's not far from Greenfield Village. Dwasson pointed out there is so much to do/see! Besides the Ford estate I'm told the other auto magnate estates are equally facinating (Dodge bros, etc.). Don't fergit the H.F.Museum also has an IMAX theatre.

When I go to Detroit, I like to take a drive down East Grand Blvd., starting on West Grand Blvd and going past the old Motown recording studios and the original Packard Motor Car assembly plant (but not a very nice area though). Then East Grand Blvd turns right and goes to the Detroit river.

Also, I like to drive over to Bell Isle along the Detroit river, near the old Detroit boat club, in and around the surrounding park area.

There's also a replica of an old detroit street with a bunch of original Detroit store recreations at one of the museums that's really cool. I haven't seen it in person myself. But I've visited the virtual website that it is on.

You could also drive up to Utica to see the old Packard proving grounds. They're turning most of the track area into housing. But, I understand that they're doing a full restoration of the buildings, shops, and the old visitor center, etc.

You should also drive to highland park and see the old Ford plant and the old Ford world headquarters buildings. One of the other original smaller , earlier Ford assembly plants burned down just recently.

You can also visit Henry Ford's home, Fairlane, in dearborn. Its owned and operated by one of the Universities.

You most definitely should visit Greenfield Village, and the Henry Ford Museum. When I go there, I always allow one day for each, because there is so much to see. My wife and I walk around and visit all of the houses and buildings in the Village.

Visit the Detroit public library and see the largest collection of automotive industry old files, photos, etc. Almost all of the old Packard corporate files and photos are there.

If you had more time (at least a week would do just fine), you could make a list of all of the famous automotive pioneer's houses, such as Horace Dodge, Henry Ford, Edsel Ford, etc., and drive by their old houses, mansions really. And you could also visit their grave sites in the Detroit cemetaries.

There really is alot of cool stuff to do in Detroit!

Its very hapening even during the week in the evening as we get closer to the actual cruise on the 20th :burnout:
 
thanks folks, we spent the day in Greenfield at the Henry Ford museum, really amazing, the kids are also done with looking at cars, I've been to two cars shows already, more here then in Chicago. The zoo sounds good.

I thanks for the welcome, I knew I was nearing Detroit as soon as there were more holes than pavement

I've found that Detroit and its burbs do take their cars more serious than Chicago. Understandable too.
Probably the most disturbing thing about Detroit is all the damn Coney Island joints! What's up widdat? Chicago dogs is where it's at!!!! Well, what can you expect from a town that hardly recognizes Italian beef sandwiches. :D
The potholes do seem to start exactly at the Detroit city limits... I've always thought it was a moat.

Next time go to the Henry Museum, your kids may be done looking at cars, but I don't think they'll mind looking at a few more to see the locomotives!

Hey! Coney Islands are fine cuisine. While there are quite a few around town, the real afficianados head downtown to either American or Lafayette. There are serious disagreements about which of the two is superior.
