Automotive artist Michael Irvine puts you right in the middle of the action as these powerful V-8s tear up the street in the excitement on Woodward Ave. Including all four colors the car was available in during 2003 and 2004, the scene captures the sinister Mercury Marauders as well as their law enforcement counterpart.
Known for his use of high impact colors, this will be one of Michael's most luminous watercolor paintings. Set against the darkening dusk sky, the green glow of the famous landmark restaurant illuminates the aggressive lines of the black modern muscle car. It closes in on the front runner, reflected in it's bumper. Acting as a perfect mirror, the Marauder's black door reflects another car flanking the driver's side ... the 'cruise' is in high-gear!
MICHAEL ON "MARAUDERS OF WOODWARD"
"The definition of a Marauder is 'a rover in quest of plunder; a raider; one who pillages.' In essence an outlaw or thief - in this case, stealing the scene - as all eyes are drawn to it.
Set on Detroit's Woodward Ave., several factors contributed to my choosing the location. Once a year thousands of cars and millions of people from all over the world are drawn to this infamous strip of asphalt to witness an eclectic range of vehicles, hear the high revving engines and take in the sweet aroma of burning rubber and high-octane fuel.
Spectators are treated to crowd pleasing burnouts and when traffic permits, quick accelerations. Many onlookers position themselves along the curb in their lawn chairs, armed with buckets of water ... waiting for the right car and the right moment. They throw their water across the road daring the drivers to perform for them. And although doing a burnout will probably cost the driver a ticket, some still step up and put on a show. The police are happy to write them up, earning revenue for City Hall, while giving the drivers a great Woodward Dream Cruise souvenir ... a stunting ticket! It's a win-win all round and it's within this spirited environment that I based the painting.
Finally, it's with Marauder enthusiasts in mind, that I chose the familiar landmark, Duggan's Irish Pub, as the backdrop to help define this location on Woodward."
