National Anthem

Just wanted to mention that now it comes to the point where at sporting events on tv when somebody starts to sing the national anthem I listen to the first verse and if its something like "ooo..whoaaa... say can you ho ho see..." (or whatever) it just grinds me. Where was Lee Harvey last night in Dallas when you needed him? I think if you cant sing it normally you should just shut up. Its not a song, soulful or otherwise. Its not to show how much you can "whoa whoa" (or whatever thats called). Just sing it straight. Better yet, dont sing it at all, have a military band or marching band or pipe organ play it with no words.

BIG +1 to that!

Just who the h*ll came up with the idea that the National Anthem has to be subject to personal expression every time it's sung?

Oh, and as long as I'm ranting, if you're gonna sing it get the :censor: words right... :mad2:

AMEN!

I couldn't agree more!
It seems that our National Anthem has become a:
"Look how many extra syllables, woos and warbles I can put into each word" compet
ition.....:mad2:

JUST SING THE ANTHEM!

Save the 'artistic expression' for your overpriced concerts!

It used to grind me too that the tune was botched up with all of the ad lib stylizations. Now I would just be happy if they found someone who actually knew some of the words. Very embarrassing..... and it is happening far too frequently.

I've stood many parades and ceremonies in uniform where the :flag: Star Spangled Banner :flag: brought tears to my eyes. Now those tears are from sheer laughter. :P

I couldn't agree more, it seems like it's an American Idol competetion everytime they sing it which makes me said. Someone with a stellar voice singing the song the way it was written is inspiring. the National Anthem is NOT open for artisitic interpretation. It wasn't written with runs, or to see how long you can hold a note.

And insult to injury, when you concentrate more on doing all that crap and forget the words, your failure is of epic proportions and you should be hung an quartered.

I totally agree. Have Toby Keith or someone that does not hate this country sing it. Don't have someone sing it that could not sing at a cattle auction.

Well, I wouldn't go that far, but I think she should have been at least stripped nekked and forced to run around the sidelines prior to start of the second quarter... ;)

That's pretty harsh!

In her case....maybe just a public embarassment....

:hmmm:

like hosing her down with water......
cold water.....
and she's in a T-shirt.....
a thin T-shirt.....

:D

.... should be hung an quartered.

I think that the term is "Drawn and Quartered" but I get the drift. ;)

You're right, hung and quartered is pretty harsh. But she should be punished. I submit she should have to spend a night with me

The folks in the Middle Ages thought so too !!!

"Convicts were fastened to a wooden hurdle and dragged by horse to the place of execution, where they were hanged (almost to the point of death), emasculated, disembowelled, beheaded and quartered (chopped into four pieces). Their remains were often displayed in prominent places across the country, such as London Bridge. For reasons of public decency, women convicted of high treason were instead burnt at the stake."

Yeah, burning is much more decent. ;)

i concur, i wanted to punch that...
I'd still hit it and inflect maximum punishment for the error.

Here is the video:

The correct lyrics:

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

This is what she sang:

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight,
What so proudly we watched, at the twilight's last gleaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

The performers will always use the excuse that they are honoring the country by performing the song with expression to the best of their ability.

Which is BS.

This was a huge debate when Jose Feliciano played a bluesy rendition in 1968 and again when Marvin Gaye embellished it in the early 80s. In the latter case people made it into a racial issue, and it had nothing to do with race. But it opened the door for anyone and everyone to turn the national anthem into their own personal spotlight.

The bottom line is that our National Anthem is supposed to be performed so that the spectators/audience can SING ALONG. When egotistical performers take the opportunity to sing along away from the fans in attendance, they make the performance about themselves and not about our country and are basically saying they they are more important than the song itself.

That goes for Hendrix, too.

As for Ms. Aguilera last night, as soon as I heard the first notes, I skipped forward on the DVR to after the song. I wish I hadn't, as it would have been satisfying to see her embarrass herself while showboating.

OK...I'm starting to forgive her for her crappy rendition of our National Anthem.
