oil gage change out???

SLOWER than few...FASTER than most!
Has anyone replaced their factory oil gage with the autolite true pressure gage? I'm trying to change mine out and its a %#$@!:mad2: . i'm catching hell just trying to get the center console out. any tips???
Help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Two questions...

Why take the oil pressure gauge out...... it provides more useful info then a tire pressure gauge, IMHO?

Why are you removing the center console when you just have to remove the gauge pod?

To remove the gauge pod search the site......

Yes, LOTS of us have replaced the OEM fake gauge, mostly with the AutoMeter UltraLite, but some have installed mechanical or electrical gauges from another source.

Tip: You have to put the shift lever in D (or lower) to get the gauge pod to clear. Also, you pull the 2 "wings" of the gauge pod down and forward to remove it. It IS a PITA, just take your time...

I recently replaced mine with a mechanical. I have all the info. you may need.

I had dificulty getting my gauge pod out too. You have to pull harder than you want or expect.

It's an "Idiot Light" with a needle!!!:confused: It stays in the same position ALL the time and only takes 2-3 PSI to trigger it!!:cool:

Real OP gauge will fluctuate from 10 PSI to 90+ PSI depending on oil temp, viscosity and engine speed!!:beer:

Exactly that. It's a glorified idiot light. Ever notice that the reading never changes, whether the engine is hot or cold, and no matter what RPM the motor is running? That's because it does not have a pressure sender, it has a pressure switch which closes at approximately 6 psi and causes the gauge to read about 62 pounds at all times. A real gauge will read about 90-100 lbs on a cold start, about 20 lbs at warm idle, and around 50-60 or so when cruising. All Ford vehicles since about 1990 have had fake oil pressure gauges.

when you change to a mechanical or autometer replacement gauge, do you have to leave the original switch hooked up for the ecm to get a reading or can you use that port?

No you do not need to leave the stock gauge for the ecm.

I changed my cigarette lighter into a third pod so I could put my boost guage in the stock cluster.

Thanks for the props. The oil pressure gauge sender change is very straight forward, 30-40 minutes. The gauge change is a little messier, probably took me an hour-1.5 hours. I work slow:o

It also helps to have the correct tools. I will search around and try to put together a step by step list for the third gauge addition. The oil pressure gauge change is here.

Is the gauge that comes stock the problem or is it just the sending unit? also, I found the part no 4327 for the replacement on the web sight but does anyone know if that is an electric unit or iis that a mechanical gauge with the oil line running to it?
 
PSG, both the gauge unit and the sender have to be replaced. Both pieces come in kit #4327. It's an electric gauge.
