Park to Drive Shift Delay

What could be causing a 2-4 second delay shifting from P to D? It seems to only happen during a cold start in the morning, no delay after starting it during the rest of the day. Seems to be in neutral for a couple of seconds prior to drive kicking in. No other noticeable problems with the shifting except this. Fluid is full, nice & red like it should be.

I had my transmission rebuilt a couple of years ago and haven't experienced any problems until now.

Thanks for any advise!

I agree it is probably the shift cable adjustment. Mine does it from park to reverse. If it does not engage the first time I just move the shifter again and it goes into gear.

Thanks for your replies. As far as shift cable adjustment, is that a quick, easy job? Also, would a properly adjusted cable go out of adjustment as time goes by? Thanks!

Mine also has a problem when switching form D to R. I have to fully pull the shifter and go behind like a millimeter past R then go back to R. This started doing it one time I parked my car and didn't properly pull the shifter and I kinda forced it to park. I have a column shifter this explains my method.

Have you tried to shift from P all the way to 2 or 1? With this it should be shifting promptly.
