Registering modified car in Cali

I did not catch exactly where you are moving ... should probably read the thread in detail, but ... only the following counties require a smog check for registration ..

People will find a way to circumvent, which means the state loses out on money. wouldn't they want the cash? Hell, I'd even pay higher registration fees to do it legal.

And as for the group California hating... wow... Really?

8:16am, Sun up... 65 degrees (gee it is COLD today!) now enroute to a balmy clear 74. Dropped my son at his school at 6:30am... where they are bussing 1.5 hours to go spring SKIING/SNOWBOARDING...

PERFECT WEATHER HERE--everything is already green and blooming... roads are SMOOTH as glass... Think I will pull the convertable out of storage today :)... and maybe go golfing!

Just kidding around guys... LOL...

Seriously, there are exemptions for out of staters that have to move here. I'll look into it for ya.

It's looking like San Diego. I lived there from 2001-2005 and loved it. One of the most beautiful cities I have ever experienced. Not surpirsed there's Cali bashing, with all the Democrat bashing that goes on this site, that will go hand in hand.

Having lived in Cali before I loved it. Never used the heat or air conditioning, 330 days of sunshine on average, just a few miles from the beach, football starts at 10am and is over before bedtime.

Plenty of reasons to love it, and if you are able to find an exception so I can get my Blue registered, then there is zero reason not to love it in my opinion.

Any chance of going with one of those specialty insurance carriers? Will an exempt status from insurance trump the DMV requirements? For instance, registering a car in VA as a classic, you don't have to go through emissions. However, you are limited by the amount you can travel.

Not sure, but maybe just another avenue to look into..

Exemptions
There are a few exemptions included in the law. As a California resident you may be able to register a 49-State vehicle if it was:
  • Obtained as part of a divorce, inheritance, or a legal separation settlement
  • Purchased it to replace your California registered vehicle stolen while you were using it out of state.
  • Purchased it to replace your California registered vehicle that was destroyed or made inoperative beyond reasonable repair while you were using it out of state.
  • An emergency vehicle, pursuant to California Vehicle Code § 27156.2 and 27156.3.
  • Registered by you in the state of your last active military service outside California.
  • A street motorcycle or motor-driven cycle year model 2005 and older with an engine less than 50 cubic centimeters (cc) displacement. Beginning January 1, 2006, street motorcycles and motor-driven cycles year model 2006 and newer, with engines less than 50 cc displacement, require an emission label certifying them to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emission regulations, and may be registered regardless of mileage.

If you are moving to California from another state, you may register a new 49-State vehicle if it was first registered by you in your home state, or for military personnel, in the last state of your military service. When applying for vehicle registration in California, you must provide evidence that the vehicle was registered.

No. 49-state vehicle has nothing to do with engine modifications that are not approved in CA.

There is a clause in their about moving from out of state, that says as long as I can prove it was legally registered in Georgia, we are good to go.

Great find, this should do it.

I feel a lot better knowing I have the EO numbers and this exception, I'm Ricking the 15 blown and loud

I wrote a thread with all the data and lost it. I have some good CA DMV tips for you to help get this done... I don't want to rewrite them all but before you leave, get as many years of registration copies as you can. Get all of the data into one neat and clean file (registration copies, 2008, 09, 10, 11, 12), many years of insurance cards with Georgia or ------ address, if you have Lisc. Etc... From there copies of that, even a power or phone bill with that same address,

GET FILE NEAT AND CLEAN AND ALL DATA ARRANGED
MAKE MONDAY AM APPOINTMENT AT LOCAL SMALL SAN DIEGO DMV
(IF YOU HAVE AAA, THEY MAY HAVE A BRANCH AND BE ABLE TO DO ALL OF THIS FOR YOU!!!!!!!!! And if you do have triple A, I'd check with them NOW to see if they can simple help you TO register it in CA NOW)

Call me and I'll give you all of the data/tips before you go in... But get all raw data above you can before you move.
 
That's great stuff, I have all my insurance going back three years,
Multiple bills and I do have triple A. Great tip to contact them, I'll definitely do that before the move.
Thanks for the advice, starting to feel a lot better about getting her registered, definitely owe you a beer or two
