Spider Gears

Well, after 242,000 miles, I have to replace the axle seals, shafts and bearings. So I have everything apart and notice the spider gears have a couple nicks in them. Question one, do I really need to replace them, and question two, are they the same as a crown vic? My ford dealer says that for a marauder I have to buy the whole differential unit, 'there are no servicable parts'. I was wondering if a crown vic gears would be the same?

yes definetly replace them!, if the spider gears are that worn i would rebuild/replace the entire carrier, an 8.8 is an 8.8, it doesnt no weather its in a marauder, or a mustang, i dont think most crown vics would have a posi, but you can always look, but then again i think a new trac loc goes for around $275 @ jegs

Looks like someone was chewing on them.

I'd replace them and completely inspect the carrier for any other problems. I'd flush out the rear & axle tubes to make sure there are no metal particles left.

The Ford 8.8 rear is completely serviceable down to replacing the clutches. Not specific to the Marauder.

I thought that you might be joking when you posted that picture....those spider gears are wasted!
I'm surprised that the differential wasn't making all sorts of noises with those chunks of spider gear bouncing around in there.

I run into this all the time at local dealerships.
It's like they are too lazy or incompetent to look the stuff up...
Some, however, are amazing and are able to find me crazy stuff.

The first time I tried to have my 4.10s installed the Ford shop foreman (friend of a friend) showed me the spider gears and he said he didn't feel comfortable doing the 4.10s with the spider gears kinda chewed up.

I ended up buying a new Ford Racing 28-spline trac-lok diff http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/item/M4204F288/Mustang-88-28-Spline-Traction-lok-Differential for $180 and down the road would rebuild my stock diff with the Cobra clutch and new spider gears.

Late Model Resto sells a spider gear rebuild kit for $160 http://www.latemodelrestoration.com...tial-Spider-Gears-28-Spline-Traction-Lok-Will and for $20 more I just deiced to get a whole new diff at that point.

Had SmokdMercRauder install the new diff and 4.10 gears. He had some issue with trying to get everything dialed in just right since he wanted to use the factory solid shims instead of the thin shims in the install kit.
