Stock trans, Harsh 1-2 shift

Hello all,
Here is the deal. Little background. Trans has 203k + miles on it. All stock, never touched internally. Trans fluid was changed approx. every 50k miles according to original owner. I trust the him because it is my father and he was raised in a garage. ;) Last changed was @ 178k miles.
No matter trans hot or cold, the 1-2 upshift is harsh at all times. There is very little difference of the firmness of the upshift whether it is part throttle or WFO. In the rain here in FL, the rear will step out if shifting near 3000 or higher rpm.
The only other clue I can give is that it seems that the trans shifts a little later than it likes for the part throttle 1-2 upshift. Depending on how large the throttle opening, it seems that shortly after the 1-2, the TC locks up and then goes for the 2-3 shift pretty quickly after lock-up. I remember the car the first 2 years of its life and remember how the trans loved to get into overdrive ASAP, including going into 2nd gear. You know, for fuel economy reasons.
Anyhow, if anyone has any insight or experience of what I could start to look for would be great. Hoping that it could be something simple (like not using Mercon V fluid last change, :shake:), but being that its a trans, I'm not holding my breathe.

Thanks for your time,
Rob

J modded car?

Tune on the car?

Is this a recent change or has it done this since you have owned it?

Car completely stock. No J-mod, no tune. I'm second owner of car, my dad first owner. About 2-3 years ago, when visiting my parents, I noticed the 1-2 shift being harsh. I don't remember it being this way the first 2 years of the car on the road when new. Asked my dad if he put in a shift kit or some other mod. He said nope, 100% stock. Hope this helps.

Thanks

The "Check Balls" in my valve body were plastic and had all but worn completely out and about half the new diameter....I had 177 K miles on mine at the time!!

It could possibly be the one(s) controlling the 1-2 shift are allowing too much fluid (pressure) through the separator plate and "bang" you have a self made J-Mod!!

Just an idea!!

Agreed.... worn check ball(s), worn 1-2 accumulator piston or broken lower 1-2 spring or all of the above.

The separator plates are known to crack where the piston(s) hit it. Examine closely. The aftermarket HP plates are thicker to prevent this.
