Temperature Guage Real?

Just curious if anyone has checked the wiring harness to see if the temperature gauge is real. I know the oil pressure gauge is fake :( but was not certain about the temperature gauge in the console.

Surely, YES! Do a search on gauges and you'll see the huge uproar this caused when we all found out...but fear not, there's a solution...AutoMeter # 4327 from Summit or Jeg's...one of the threads has a very nice tutorial on how to replace it...(you need to do the sender and the gauge)

You have a temp gauge in the console? Mine's in the dashboard, but it IS real, it just isn't calibrated in any meaningful way...it's more useful as a relative gauge, so you can see if the motor is getting hotter than normal, or has warmed up yet, you just can't tell what the actual temp is. With my 180° thermostat, the needle points exactly at the 20 MPH mark on the speedo, so that's my reference...
 
I didn't know that! Why the h*#! would L/M go to the trouble of putting in a fake gauge, when a real one couldn't have been much more expensive!! Can't wait to share this with my service mgr!

EXACTLY!

Know your baseline standard temperature and the gauge will be useful for knowing when it's running hotter than normal.

I put a cylinder head temperature gauge in my car (monitors the coolant in the heads) so I have a backup if necessary. Maybe you guys could do the same. Temp gauges are inexpensive. Look on the side of your heads to see if there's a threaded 3/8" or so plug. Not sure about the F/LM heads...

You could also check for a test port in the side of your transmission, just make sure it's a "wet" port, then you can monitor your trans temp too. This is important when running a non-stock converter or a tight race-prepped trans. Don't install the sender near the trans cooler, you want the temp inside the transmission.

I really like the gauge setup in the MM interior, looks awesome!

Well, yeah...to go faster requires more power, so the motor gets hotter...when the temp gauge is all the way on "H", it points at 55 MPH, so I can't go any faster than that...

I haven't changed my 'stat yet and my gauge is pointing at 20 mph also. I'll be changing it this week and see if it changes.

Correct. It just the approximate temperature at which the thermostat will open.

LOGAN TOOK OUT MY CIG. LIGHTER AND PUT IN A TRANNY TEMP GAGUE . LOOKS RIGHT , AND WORKS FINE .
 
Just got the thermostat changed today. The temperature gauge indication is barely different. With the stock thermostat it pointed at the upper edge of the 20 mph tick mark, with the 180 it points at the lower edge of the tick mark. I wouldn't have been able to see a difference unless I paid close attention to the before and after.

Thanks, dude...I forgot to check exactly where mine was with the stock thermostat, and when you said that your stock unit was pointing at the 20 MPH mark, same as my 180° 'stat, I began to get worried...I guess I expected a bigger change, even though it's only 12° cooler...
