To lock in 3rd or not to lock in 3rd....

Well I am still tweaking the trans tune and currently have no 3rd gear TC lock up. Just looking for some opinions here for a daily driver.

I have 4.10s and a 3.5k TC, it is fairly close to what I want but wouldn't mind that feeling of an extra gear. When I go back to the tuner I'm thinking about giving it a try but want to see how others are running.

For you guys that are running with 3rd gear lockup about what speed are you locking up the TC in regular throttle and WOT?

im also wondering about the 3-4 and 4-3 shift points, along 4th gear lock/unlock?

Having 3rd lock up will probably get you a little better mileage. I have ran both ways now. Lock up is around 45 in 4th only now. I think I like it so far. Not sure when it locked in 3rd with the other tune 40 ish? Dont think my converter locks at wot but not sure.

I have run both ways and I like the lockup in 3rd at about 38 MPH with O/D OFF and it locks in 4th at 42 MPH with the O/D ON!!:D I have the TC set to unlock on coasting with the throttle butterflies closed and a 2 second delay for TC lockup after throttling back up......prevents the lock/unlock foolishness of the OEM tune!!;)

We tried many different combinations and this is the best one for my around town driving!!!

Also, be sure that they set the TC to unlock at about 50% throttle and well BEFORE any downshifts!!! Your transmission will like it A LOT better!!:D

This may be a bit of a thread jack but what is the benefits when your converter is not locked in 3rd gear (or 2nd or 4th for that matter)? And oh man I would love to get mine like Mauraderjack's and quit locking and unlocking when feathering the throttle.

Thanks, was wondering about how to get rid of that. It was the main reason I had him take it out of the tune in the first place. I drive 32 miles of city driving each way to/from work and it drove me crazy with the constant lock/unlock. Adding this to my notes for when I go back in a week or so. :D

I only have the 3:55 gears but I found it best for me to have no 3rd gear lockup and I use that around town. On the highway I let her go into 4th, then lockup is set for 57mph.

I have had two people do tunes for me and with both I insisted on 3rd gear lockup. There's no reason not to lock in 3rd. If you are on the gas hard enough it will delay it so it's not obtrusive and if you are not on the gas hard, it's gonna save some heat in the trans. I had my lockup adjusted to suit me. WIth my old SCT 9100 and extreme tune I can adjust the lock/unlock speeds in 2, 3, and 4 myself if I want to mess with it further.
