Torture!!!

DOOM

HEMI HUNTER
Just picked my car up from the shop. I Had the 31 splines & cobra diff put in! :banana2:

The guys told me to take it easy for the first few hundred miles!!!

NO BURNOUTS!!! :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry:

Thats cruel and unusual punishment! :depress: :alone:

Change the gear oil after 500 if you want to be really anal.

Should drive for 10 - let cool for 30 mins - repeat 3x and they are broken in.

Hmmm...

My wrench, after installing the 410's, did drive it easy for the first couple of miles to get the lube circulated around while listening closely for any abnormal whine, growling, etc..

Then,....

Buh-waaaaaaaaaaaah!

:D

No recommended 500 mile lube change.

Drive it like you stole it.

Good-To-Go ever since.

Mike.

I went to the track days after installing my 4.10's. Driven it hard ever since. Zero problems.

Yeah, REAL men don't drive like wussies after getting mods installed... :burn:

Or untill?

Go for a long drive on your day off, that will do the trick...

never understood the "break in" period on this kinda stuff, its pointless.

you go to test drive a new car, do you baby it? no! you thrash it. think anyone else that drove it before you babied it? no!

drive that **** like you stole it

Agreed. They just want to cover their butts in case you grenade it so they can show you the door and blame you.
I had my gears installed and did a brake stand right outside the shop. I consider that my wear pattern. ;)

Can you tell me a rough idea of what this cost to do (parts and labor) ? Just checking against what I have been quoted here.
thanks!

Speaking from experience you are supposed to drive as you normally would. There is no break in period on anything. Even on my second engine I was at the track when it had 80 miles on it.

This is the proper way, not 'drive 100 miles'.

10 min/30 min isn't exact either, but a better rule of thumb.

You're supposed to take it through 3 heat cycles before putting power through it. Without a differential temp gauge to tell you if you've made it to operating temp, 10-20 min of driving (not idling/driving) should get you up to temp. Lower highway speeds are preferable. (40-50)

And yes, gear break in is absolutely essential for a street driven car. Most factory vehicles will see at the very least 1 heat cycle in the differential before it gets to the show room floor, and a few more while being test driven. It is more important to do this with after market gear sets though.

Pure race cars do not worry about this procedure, because they never drive long enough to heat up the differential to a level which can damage the gears. Street cars this is a must.
