Lighting Control Module Recall

babbage - My Ford letter said that offer was good until October 2014 ...
Ummmm ... Letter I got indicates that the limited warranty is extended to 15 years (which for me would mean 2018) or 250,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, which ever comes first.

Wonder why yours is different?

Has anyone taken their car to the dealer for this? I'm getting conflicting information regarding if the diagnostic machine can pick up on whether the LCM is failing. Ford is saying they must replicate the problem. It only happens to me from time to time. I don't want to waste my time going to the dealer just to have them say it's fine when I know it's not.

I went this morning and they hooked up their computer. It says I need a new one so they ordered one up. I was the first one that came in on the issue at their dealership. Your Ford dealership is full of s***.

Lol kinda wanna go to my local ford dealer just to see what they'll tell me....hhmm is it worth getting the lcm replaced even though the issue was fixed? Lol

I got a letter in the mail from Ford about my 2003 Grand Marquis (They still don't know it's a Marauder) concerning the LCM and extending the warranty on it. I immediately faxed a invoice for almost $800.00. Check should be in the mail in the next 2 weeks.

Thanks Ford.

Got my letter yesterday. Going to stop by the dealer and see if they will exchange an LCM for a new one. Will take apart the new one and see what's different. Will report with my findings.

Yo, Jim, now you're really pushing the envelope!

I bet there is nothing different or upgraded inside. Since it takes time, at least a few years, to fail I bet Ford is banking on the warranty running out or the cars being junked / sold before the majority experience the problem again. That's my opinion anyway.........

Yesterday, I took my Team Ford part receipt for the LCM, showing that I paid 275.00, to my local dealer. He said he had done a few of the LCM replacements, already. He said he would fax it off and I should probably hear from him on Monday to come and pick up a check. OK we will see........

Mine said 15 years or 250,000 miles also - but if over 250K you have until October 2014 to get it replaced for free.

Yeah - got mine today too. I'm guessing from the look of this that there should be about 8,000 more responses to this thread :).

I could have done the Jim route, but since I am capable of doing this kind of stuff, I chose to replace the OEM relay inside, esp. since I bought a few of them from Mouser Electronics before discovering Jim's Binford 6100 relay fix. The original headlight relay went out at 100k miles. The 2nd one (replacement headlight relay) went at 115k miles. I am now at 151k miles on relay #3. If Murphy does what he does best, the relay will last until April 28th, 2019, and then fail the day after.

Same here. I replaced probably six years ago and no issues yet. The factory solder job was really thin and cracking. I think this had a lot to do with why they failed. I just replaced all four and soldered it up real nice.

Jim - I generally agree with you on this one. No only are they banking on the warranty running out, why would they put out $100,000.00+ to redesign and certify another design? Especially for a part that was only used for a couple o' few years.

About the ONLY thing they MIGHT have done is to replace the relay(s) inside with an exact duplicate of the relay currently used, except with the higher contact rating. The relay contacts in this LCM are rated at 10 amps. Normal current with two headlights runs about 7.5 amps. As I'm sure you're already aware, Jim, it's the inrush current from the bulbs that destroys the contacts. Inrush current on incandescent bulbs is between 12-15 times the steady state current. Really poor design constraints on Ford's part on this item. Even with fudge factor, a 10 amp contact will not last as long as it could.

I have examined other LCMs from both Ford and GM. Generally speaking, they use relays with 20 and 25 amp contact ratings. Still somewhat marginal, but will certainly last longer than a 10 amp version.

That's why Jim's fix with an external relay with 40 amp capacity will last the life of the car.

AH HA! So you admit it (you're over 250,000 miles). :D

Understand ...

hehe nope 108K on the clock now! Did drive from NY to LA last year!
Marauder Jack I think was close to 250K...

I got an LCM professionally upgraded by Fastblackmerc so can't take Ford up on their offer... ;)

Fax?

I thought the paid receipt had to be brought into the dealer to submit....that it wouldn't be accepted any other way ?
