4l80e transmission question..

Procharged Marauder
After breaking my freddy brown 4stb trans, repairing that, and now I'm pretty sure my billet torque converter broke, I'm possibly looking to ditch the 4r in favor of a 4l80e, anyone here running an 80e? Just looking for maybe a little feedback on how you like it
Regards Seneca

I have a Hughes 4L80E but its still in the crate , as mentioned CWright ran a 4L80E it transformed the way the car drove and shifted , the 4L80E or the 6R80 are your best options.

I cannot understand how these built transmissions break. I absolutely pound my 2 built 4r70's with no issues

Torque is what kills them, switching to a highly effficient non lockup converter might save it for a few more years.

I'm with you. We usually go thru 2nd gear clutches every 2 years, but we on the track alot. Something hard finally broke. I havent torn it down yet to see what. We just have trans go kit, extra clutches in a couple packs and the 300m stub. None of the fancy hard parts yet.

I would honestly just go with the 6R Seneca. the controller is out, it bolts right up and has been proven to handle A LOT of power in its stock form so no need to spend money on building one after getting it and it has 2 extra gears.

Unfortunately, i can attest to the fact that they are the weak link in the drive train..... I went thru one stock and (2) built transmissions.

Thanks for all the info guys, and the inside scoop on the trans you guys are running, really appreciate it, I haven't pulled mine yet, I have alot of actual work jobs before that happens, at the moment I am really leaning towards the 6r80 I got time tho and need to do more research, when I started the build on this care originally I intended to be on the track more then the road, things have changed and I really enjoy driving the car on the street, I'm not crazy about shifting gears all the time, my current trans is a manual valve body trans brake all that good stuff likely I'll do the 6r80 as it sounds like a good choice for me
I'll update when I get to the car
Thanks again

I have a 4L80e in mine. 200k junkyard unit I put a hd2 kit in and a 3200 edge racing converter. Handles abuse well, best pass so far 11.4 @121

Question for those with 4L80. What did you do with the shifter? I retained the stock shifter but feel it could be better. Curious what others have done.

So....does anyone here actually have a 6R80 bolted up? I'm running a Trilogy kit w/mods on a stock trans + shift kit. My factory trans is definitely on borrowed time.

Its about $2200 to get the trans built and get a good converter.
Far cheaper than a 6R swap

A newbe here but looking for feed back , cause was looking at 4l80e then lighning friend said 4r100 has been good for him runs mid 10s any body have experience with them

Gotcha, I guess the labour is the big part of it.

A lightly used 6R80 is about $1500, and the Quick 6 System with 6R80 Wiring Harness is $1249. Says the 6R bolts up to a mod motor, but nothing really is that easy, huh?

I figured since the 6R is proven to hold close to 1000hp, that one coming out of a wrecked F150 wouldn't need a rebuild.

$1500 is a lot for a 6R80 out of an F150. The more than likely range you would be paying for one is between $500(higher miles) and $1000 (lower miles) with some extremely low miles one in the area of $1500.

You also forgot to add in the price of the driveshaft which was around $1050 for me. Pretty sure it would be the same price for others wanting to go the same route.

And It really does bolt right up. Now you do need a couple of new things like longer trans to engine bolts, 5.0 flexplate, new flexplate bolts, four torque converter to flexplate nuts, trans mount nuts and that spacer in between the trans and engine which can all easily be found on a ford site.

Biggest hurdle one would have had was getting the 6R to work with the stock transmission cross-member but I found out that is pretty simple also. By simply cutting out the top of the cross-member where the 4R once sat and flipping it around the 6R falls in place PERFECT. I struggled trying to make my own transmission mount, got tired of messing with it ordered a 2011 F-150 trans mount to see how it would work and to my surprise it worked perfectly. Drill two holes for your new trans mount and you are done wit the cross-member.
