Filled up the Marauder an hour ago...

You buy, yes. People buy, no. Ever go into a Sams, Wal-mart or similiar store and say "gee, 500 people just bought this gallon of milk, so I want it for a buck less?" What the frak, is there stupid juice loose in the air in Chicago this week or what???

Crabby paddy:D

I wonder what all the folks who rushed to put up their 'gas-guzzling' vehicles for sale just a few months ago are thinking now.

It's all about how other taxes are levied on the gallon of gas by the state at retailers. they just carry it over to the consumers. Average reg unl is going for about $1.95 down in Miami, but in FL there's no state income tax , or personal prop tax. Major urban area, so the retailers tend to be a bit higher than elsewhere, ...
mom and pop retailers down in the Keys are selling for less....

You know these prices won't last. The oil compaines know that we will pay whatever they charge. It'll only be a matter of time before they will be laughing again. :depress:

 Be careful of what you wish for. Gas might be cheaper in VA; but have you heard of our annual Personal Property tax (i.e. aka the "Dreaded Car Tax)? If your MM is worth $13,000 you will have to pay $481.00 next year in P.P. tax. The rate for my county is $3.70 per $100 of value. That tax applies EVERY year as the car depreciates. To offset the difference, you would have to save 48 cents on every gallon of gas if you average 20K miles per year (about 1,000 gallons of gas).

Wow that SUCKS !! I never heard of that before. So in the end you will have paid more in taxes on the car then it'll be worth. With government you never win, I don't know about other states but here in NY a car can be sold 100X's and it's taxed every time.

yeah, and people that are getting by in their Corollas and civics are saving even more money on their current budgets. yeah, they got rid of their Hummers and Big SUV's, but I don't see many of them getting back into them. The economy is in a funk, so alot of folks are travelling less/ spending less. and keeping their current cars longer, including me.
I don't need to get rid of my DD even at 12.5 mpgs, even if the gas shoots back up $3 plus or more...I average 8K a year in my vehicles.

Not quite ... but over time it can add up to a decent chunk of change. Over 5 years with the Marauder, I estimate that I have paid about $2,900 in personal property tax. This is in addition to the initial sales tax. The personal property tax accounts for about 20% of the revenue for my county. Most of the rest is in residential and commercial real estate taxes.

The real "kicker" is that the car tax comes in the form of a bill every year in early September and is due by 5 October each year. I realize that the county needs its cut ... but they should just roll it into a real estate tax increase instead of mailing out bills for $1000-$1500 to everyone especially right at back to school time when most people are out buying stuff, clothes, books and tuition for the kids. I guess the alternative was to drop the bills on 30 November with them due on 25 December.

To be honest, Virginia started to phase out "The Dreaded Car Tax" about 10 years ago but relief never got above 70% when they froze the amount at a fixed level. That means the "relief" is reduced as a percentage each year. I am still paying 40% of the calculated amount. Next year will be 42%, then 44%, and so on. Won't be long before we are back to paying the whole thing.

Oh yeah, a county sticker goes on your windshield to show that you paid the tax.

Welcome to Virginia ....... ;)

Then for me Virginia is a nice place to visit, but I'm not moving there. :D
Of course, Virginia's top income tax is 5.25% whereas in NY you "Pay 6.85 percent in state income tax on earnings between approximately $20,000 and $100,000. The majority of adults fall in this tax bracket." New York's rate climbs to 7.325% above $100K and reaches a top level of 7.7% for those equal to $500K or over. So there are certain trade-offs by state.

Car insurance is another big difference. I lived out on Long Island (Nassau County) for 2 years. It is the ONLY place where I had to have 3 photos (front, side, and rear) of the car to get insurance. Seems there are quite a few New Yorkers who file false damage claims or register non-existent vehicles. Don't know whether that is still a requirement. Upon moving back to Virginia, my car insurance was "half" of the amount that I was paying in New York. That's another trade-off.

I understand what you mean about the income tax, but I look at it quite simply as "out of sight out of mind". If the tax is taken out of my salary I never see it, whereas if there was a seperate bill to pay the tax on the car yearly it just feels like another bill to worry about. Maybe that's not the right way to look at it, but for me it "feels" better.

As for the car insurance you only need pictures if you put comprehensive and collision on the car, but only if it is not a new car. New cars are exempt from pictures. I don't have a problem with having the pictures taken as it also helps your case if you need to put a claim in and with pictures you can prove the condition of the car, no way of blowing you off with the pictures. I don't know why someone would register a non-existent vehicle?
I lived in Bayside Queens and now live in central Suffolk, and there was a substantial drop in the insurance cost (approx 40%). Although I bet some of that is due to the fact that I am getting :geezer: :(

CBT sorry for the :hijack: now back to gas prices :)

No problem, highjacked threads don't bother me none. Some people freak out for some reason, tho. Charlie is right, I have to pay that damn tax, too. At least the city assesses the Marauder at less than what the bank says it's worth or I'd be paying more.

I think I'm moving to Virginia if I can get plates like these:

P.S., these are on CBT's car.

Wouldn't Take $25.00 worth

Stopped at Sunoco on the way home from work last night ....

Sunoco 93 $1.739
Sunoco 89 $1.619
Sunoco 87 $1.499

Just 14 gallons for a fill-up ... it wouldn't take an even $25.00. This is Great!!!!

Guess my "prediction" that we would NEVER see $2 gas again was a little off the mark. But I think maybe we won't see $1 gas .... Hope I bust that prediction too. :D

Latest news on the web says you will see $1.00 gas soon. Last night 1.65 for shell 87 (escort) 10.2 gallons for $17.00!

just bought a fusion.... still going to run Premium.

why not? the price difference doesnt affect me enough to justify running crappy gas

Filled up at Sunoco yesterday -- $23.00 ....

Sunoco 93 $1.699
Sunoco 89 $1.579
Sunoco 87 $1.459

Lovin' It. :D

Folks are doin' such a great job of reducing travel, carpooling and saving gas that the Feds are thinking about doubling the fuel tax to pay for Obama's "Roads, Bridges, and Infrastructure" program. No good deed goes unpunished. Can you say "BOHICA" boys and girls?

And there's already talk of "doubling" the tobacco tax, too.

Anybody want to guess when the "Income Tax" gets increased? I think 21 January will be a start on that. :P

Yep, I suspect that we will see alot of CHANGE. Particularly in our pockets.

Correction Charlie. From what you stated above, we won't see any CHANGE in our pockets.

Mike.
