Just got my new variable control Weller iron myself... Decided I needed the better model. Needed the variation in tip sizes too.

As a supporting member, I voiced my opinion because a owner shouldn't be playing favorites. Ford stepped up, will warranty the LCM's for 15 years, who cares if you have to get it replaced 2 or 3 times if it costs you nothing. Speaking of nothing...... there are several members on here that will fix them for -$0-, yet no suggestions for someone to use them.

I am quite sure myself and others are more than qualified, I just choose not to take members money, the whole purpose of a "club" is for members to help one another, usually money is not exchanged in said transaction.

I fail to see how promoting a supporting VENDOR is "playing favorites". AFAIK, Jim is the only supporting vendor offering LCM repair, so who else would we promote? If someone else wants to get props, they can become a supporting vendor, too.

UHHHMMMMM, Ford maybe, since they are fixing for no cost. It wouldn't make good sense to become a "vendor" to do free work, your not a vendor if your not running a business.

That's assuming they're actually FIXING the problem, by providing a corrected/improved LCM. If they are just replacing the original poor design with an identical part, then I don't call that a "fix", I call it a temporary band-aid, since it WILL fail again.

Possibly so, but if you read the TSB, they are extending the warranty to 15 years, so I say, let them replace the POS original 10 times, if it's free, I see no issue.

FWIW, my cars 10 years old, still has the original LCM, these cars are built with parts from other manufacturers, there is always to possibility of inferior parts.

In that case I would agree with you, to a point. I wouldn't want to have failing headlights over and over and keep wasting my time bringing the car back if I can pay a small fee and have it fixed permanently. If in fact the new LCM is an improved version, then it's a moot point.

No one ever figured it would be a problem when we bought the cars, 98-02 didn't have the problem, nor have the 05-11's although I have had a couple LCM's quit on later model vics. Since Ford finally see's it to be an issue, I would make the assumption that they are using the parts from the later model LCM's, or have re-worked the later units to work on earlier models. either way, how many 03-04 panther's are still on the road?

I see it as Ford owes me about 145 or so LCM's, I'll see what Ford-Fleet has to say about that.....probably tell me to EAD
