The coolest NATURAL thing you've seen?

Tons. I'm always in awe of nature.

The Aurora from the far North. It surrounds you, and no picture can do it justice. It's almost alive.

Wow, Glen, just ....wow.

I should have seen the Southern Cross, from Eniwetok, but can't remember. Stephen Stills song about it, I remember well ...it's one of my favorites, along with my all time favorite line ....

Got out of town on a boat goin' to southern islands
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades on the outside
And the downhill run to Papeete

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas
We got eighty feet of waterline, nicely making way
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away

{Refrain}
Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What heaven brought you and me
Cannot be forgotten
I have been around the world
Lookin' for that woman-girl
Who knows love can endure
And you know it will

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day

So I'm sailing for tomorrow, my dreams are a dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain
I have my ship, and all her flags are a flyin'
She is all that I have left, and music is her name

{Refrain}

And you know it will

So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do
You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along
Make me forget about loving you
And the Southern Cross

Mike,

Have you heard Jimmy Buffet's version? I have heard it a few times in concert. Very nice.

Just saw the redwoods last year. Wanted to see them before I kicked and before a disaster takes em out.

Next on list??? Some of the places listed in this thread have me thinking.

Too much to narrow down. Hop in your car and drive. Stay off the interstates and do Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Hampshire, Virginia, Maine. Arizona, New Mexico, Texas Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi are cool too. The beaches in Rhode Island, are up there too. Just so much out there. Any sunrise you see the first time somewhere is usually pretty awesome.

1976 300 miles off the coast of VA on a 37' sailboat.

We had been becalmed for 40 hours. The sea was as slick as glass.

At nite the sky was clear and we were engulfed in the heavens. The sea had become a mirror. It was like we were in the heavens. Everywhere you looked there were stars all around us.

Our navigator was unable to get a star shot w/ the sextant because there was no descernable horizon.

Viewing Saturn thru a scope in South, LA. People were walking around the scope to make sure no one had taped a picture of Saturn over the scope.

A Tugboat Captain CoonAss set up an observatory w/ some very sophisticated equipment. He also has equipment to view the sun. The guru of filters made a filter that was the most perfect he had ever made and sold it to my friend. Becuase my friend treated him like a human being.

The filter guru then got very ill and retired. End result a Tugboat Captain CoonAss is sending pics of the sun to the Nat'l Observatory at their request!

The ability of human beings to create a solution to a problem by simply thinking things out.
To be able to build, change, adapt, design, engineer, overcome is awesome.

The power of reason is simply amazing to me.

Have not seen much of it lately, but it does exist.
